I’ve heard several people describe Virgil Van Dijk as the best centre back in the world right now and I find it hard to disagree!

The premier league has been where the money is for quite some time, but has not necessarily attracted the best players in the world, often appearing to over-pay some very average players.

So, I just thought I would pose the question – In recent times, who do you think has played in the premier league that might be able to claim he is the best in the world at his position?

A couple of guys come to mind to start you off with – David De Gea IMHO has been the best goalie in the world in recent years, though maybe not this season. I also think that on current form, Liverpool have another world beater at the back in Andrew Robertson! I certainly think he is the best attacking full-back in the world (His crossing ability is a match for any player I have ever seen), has a phenomenal work rate and rarely seems to be caught out defensively. Best left back in the world? Quite possibly!

Before the money got really big in football, there were a few – Kevin Keagan, Kenny Dalglish and of course Carlton Palmer, but since the start of the premier league, I think there have been very few. Even when United were dominating for years, there were very few… Peter Schmeichel, maybe David Beckham, but other than that, just players who were the best in the country, rather than the world

Who would you say from recent seasons?
