Jimmy Shan praises “great resilience and great character” in latest West Brom win

West Brom caretaker manager Jimmy Shan hailed the resilience of his players after seeing them fight back to claim a 3-2 win over local rivals Birmingham at The Hawthorns. Albion twice had to come from behind to secure a third successive victory since Shan was appointed and move to within four points of second-placed Sheffield United in the Sky Bet Championship. Gary Gardner’s seventh-minute opener and Lukas Jutkiewicz’s second-half strike for the visitors were cancelled out by Dwight Gayle and a Jay Rodriguez penalty, before Jake Livermore sealed victory with a 74th-minute winner. Shan said: “It was great resilience and great character. “I think the group and the team have had that throughout the season. “We had a little motivational DVD before the game and in...

Andy Carroll’s West Ham career could be over after latest setback

Andy Carroll may have played his last game for West Ham after yet another injury setback. The former England striker has been missing from the Hammers squad for the last two matches, and manager Manuel Pellegrini has now revealed Carroll has an ankle problem. Carroll, 30, will be out of contract in the summer and, having started only three Premier League games all season, he is not expected to be offered a new one. Pellegrini was unable to put a timescale on Carroll’s return but his past injury record has raised fears that he will not appear again this term. “Andy Carroll has an ankle problem,” said Pellegrini. “How serious we don’t know, I cannot tell you. “We need to wait for some medical examinations and after that we will know.” Carroll joined West Ham from Liverpool in 2012, initially...

McClaren points accusing finger at referee Harrington for latest defeat

An angry Steve McClaren blamed poor refereeing decisions for QPR’s fifth successive Championship defeat. The Rangers boss went on to the pitch at the final whistle to remonstrate angrily with referee Tony Harrington after watching Famara Diedhiou net a stoppage-time winner from the spot after he was impeded by Darnell Furlong. McClaren said: “Their penalty was ridiculous, and when the referee sees it again he will realise what a big mistake he has made. “The foul was on Furlong, not the other way around. The fact that he took five seconds to give the penalty showed the doubt in his mind. “We should have had at least one penalty at the other end. What the controversy shouldn’t detract from is an excellent performance from ourselves. “It is a second kick i...

Frank Lampard refused to comment on Marcelo Bielsa‘s latest press conference as the spying row between Leeds and Derby continued to unfold. Bielsa gave a lengthy presentation to journalists on Wednesday evening while making the frank admission that Leeds had “observed all the rivals” in training sessions prior to playing them in the Sky Bet Championship this season. It comes after a staff member of Leeds was caught by police at the Derby training ground attempting to gain information ahead of the Friday night fixture, which Leeds subsequently won 2-0, and prompted accusations of spying. Bielsa went to extreme lengths on Wednesday to show all the detailed analysis he does of opponents aside from covertly watching them train, but Lampard refused to be drawn on the topic onc...

Benitez hopes latest takeover talk does not affect Newcastle players

Rafael Benitez is hoping the latest whirl of takeover speculation will not distract his Newcastle players. Just as it did 12 months ago, Tyneside will approach Christmas bathed in uncertainty following owner Mike Ashley‘s revelation on Monday evening that his 14-month quest to finally sell the club he has owned for 11 and and half fractious years could come to fruition within weeks. Fans who have heard it all before could be forgiven for greeting the latest news with scepticism less than a year after Amanda Staveley‘s PCP Capital Partners failed to prise the Magpies from Ashley’s grasp. But manager Benitez will carry on regardless in the hope that all the apparent activity behind the scenes does not coincide with the kind of form which saw his side go nine Premier League ...
