Result: Last-gasp Riyad Mahrez fires Algeria into AFCON final at Nigeria’s expense

The Manchester City midfielder won it with the last kick of the game. Riyad Mahrez curled in an injury-time free-kick to send Algeria through to the Africa Cup of Nations final in a 2-1 victory against Nigeria. The game had looked to be heading to extra time as the two teams battled for the right to play Senegal in Friday’s showpiece, but Manchester City midfielder Mahrez won it for Algeria late on. Algeria went ahead courtesy of a first-half own goal by William Troost-Ekong, with the Udinese central defender turning a Mahrez cross into his own net. Odion Ighalo equalised with a penalty for Nigeria, with the spot-kick awarded for handball after a VAR review. An additional 30 minutes seemed likely but Mahrez settled the tie with what proved to be the last kick of the match, curling in...

Hassen came racing towards the penalty spot to try to cut out a cross from the right flank but completely missed the ball, which then hit the unfortunate Bronn. Ferjani Sassi missed a penalty for Tunisia and Henri Saivet did likewise for Senegal but that was not the end of the drama. Premier League duo Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino were on the scoresheet as the host nation inflicted more major tournament misery on Argentina, who have lost four of the last five Copa America finals and are still without a trophy since 1993. The final scoreline was harsh on the visitors, who hit the woodwork through Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi, but Lionel Scaloni‘s side ultimately went unrewarded for arguably their best performance of the tournament to date. Defender Van Der Gragt secured a deserved Dutch success 10 minutes later, nodding home another Spitse set-piece. Italy were second best at Stade du Hainaut and twice saved by the woodwork while the game remained goalless. In the build-up to the match, Holland’s request to push back the afternoon kick-off because of the heatwave in France was turned down by tournament organisers. The searing temperatures resulted in scheduled drink breaks and contributed to a dra...
