Result: Derby County stun Leeds United to reach Championship playoff final

Derby County beat Leeds United 4-2 at Elland Road and 4-3 on aggregate to set up a Championship playoff final clash with Midlands rivals Aston Villa. Derby County have booked a place in the Championship playoff final with a remarkable 4-2 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road, recovering from a two-goal aggregate deficit to progress through 4-3 on aggregate. The Rams, trailing 1-0 from Saturday’s first leg, found themselves with a mountain to climb when Stuart Dallas found a way through 24 minutes in. County boss Frank Lampard brought on Jack Marriott towards the end of the first half, though, and that proved an inspired change as the striker kickstarted his side’s comeback following a big error at the back from Kiko Casilla and Liam Cooper. Mason Mount levelled up the tie l...

Dwight Gayle gave the Baggies an early lead but was sent off in the closing stages, and two goals during a four-minute period in the second half from Conor Hourihane and Tammy Abraham sealed the win for the home side. Villa started brightly with Glenn Whelan sending a header over the crossbar from a well-worked corner, but West Brom did not take long to pose a threat at the other end. Jay Rodriguez was teed up on the edge of the area, and it took a stunning one-handed save from Jed Ste...

Recap: The final day of the Championship

Derby held their nerve to claim the final play-off place in the Sky Bet Championship as Norwich wrapped up the title on a topsy-turvy final day of the regular season. The Rams seemed set to agonisingly miss out when Martyn Waghorn’s 19th-minute header was cancelled out by West Brom midfielder Stefan Johansen’s curling effort moments after the interval. With Middlesbrough leading already-relegated Rotherham at the time, Derby could ill-afford to drop points and substitute Mason Bennett’s goal and Harry Wilson’s controversial penalty gave them a 3-1 win. Result: Norwich defeat Villa to seal Championship title

Norwich clinched the Sky Bet Championship title after a 2-1 win against play-off bound Aston Villa at Villa Park. Mario Vrancic sealed victory in the 86th minute as Norwich won the second tier title for the fourth time. Teemu Pukki had given Norwich a seventh-minute lead with his 30th goal of the season but Jonathan Kodjia quickly equalised for Villa with his third strike in four games. Norwich, who won at Villa Park for the first time in 10 games stretching back to 1992, ended the season with a 14-match unbeaten run. Villa suffered their first defeat in 13 matches and will face a play-off semi-final against local rivals West Brom. Norwich could have taken the lead inside the opening minute after a surge down the left wing by Onel Hernandez. He cut the ball back for Marco Stiepermann but t...

Result: Bolton suffer defeat at Forest in final Championship game

Crisis club Bolton bowed out of the Sky Bet Championship with a whimper as a patched together side suffered a 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest. Martin O’Neill’s side notched three consecutive wins for the first time since December 2016 as Joe Lolley‘s 12th goal of the campaign earned them a narrow 1-0 success at the City Ground. Bolton, condemned to a 15th away defeat of the campaign, are contemplating a future in League One with the ownership of the club still up in the air. Their players had ended a strike – staged in protest following the late payment of wages – to play the game, but it was Forest who claimed the spoils. The Reds had more of the ball in the opening exchanges, but it was Bolton who were first to threaten as Harry Brockbank’s shot from just inside t...

PFA’s Championship Team of the Year revealed

Finland forward Teemu Pukki is one of three players from title-chasing Norwich in the Professional Footballers’ Association Championship Team of the Year 2019. The division’s 28-goal top scorer is joined by Canaries full-backs Max Aarons and Jamal Lewis. Daniel Farke’s side are top of the table with two games left and need just a point at home to Blackburn on Saturday to secure promotion back to the Premier League after a three-year absence. PA Graphic Pukki joined on a free transfer from Brondby in the summer, while full-backs Aarons and Lewis are products of the club’s academy. Sheffield United are just three points behind the Canaries, with the pair now looking set to fight for the title. Blades duo Oliver Norwood and Billy Sharp both make the PFA selection. Midf...

Championship roundup: Norwich made to wait for promotion despite Leeds slip-up

Sky Bet Championship leaders Norwich were forced to wait to secure promotion to the Premier League after being held to a 2-2 draw by Stoke. The Canaries could have sealed top spot with victory at the Bet365 Stadium but they had to settle for a point for a fourth game in succession. That allowed Sheffield United to cut the gap at the top to three points but Norwich will still return to the top flight if they take a point from either of their two remaining games. Four draws on the bounce. #ncfc pic.twitter.com/ZfgobKHxWB — Norwich City FC (@NorwichCityFC) April 22, 2019 Onel Hernandez fired Daniel Farke’s side ahead against Stoke after 24 minutes but the Potters responded after the break through Ashley Williams. Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook “delighted” to secure Championship safety

Paul Cook could not hide his delight – and relief – at seeing his Wigan side secure their Sky Bet Championship status with two games to spare thanks to a 2-0 victory over Preston at the DW Stadium. Goals in either half from Leon Clarke and Lee Evans were enough to sink Preston, who played for 56 minutes with 10 men after Ryan Ledson was sent off for a high challenge on Wigan’s Kal Naismith. Coupled with Rotherham’s 3-1 home defeat to Birmingham, it was enough to see Wigan – last year’s League One champions – to confirm their second-tier status for another campaign. And after a worrying slide down the table in recent months, Cook was just happy to achieve the club’s solitary target at the beginning of the season. “We’re delighted,” the Wigan boss sa...

Championship roundup: Norwich promotion delayed

Sky Bet Championship leaders Norwich were forced to wait to secure promotion to the Premier League after being held to a 2-2 draw by Stoke. The Canaries could have secured top spot had they won at the Bet365 Stadium and other results gone in their favour but they had to settle for a point for a fourth game in succession. Four draws on the bounce. #ncfc pic.twitter.com/ZfgobKHxWB — Norwich City FC (@NorwichCityFC) April 22, 2019 Onel Hernandez fired Daniel Farke’s side ahead after 24 minutes but Stoke responded after the break through Ashley Williams. Teemu Pukki, netting his 28th league goal of the season, restored Norwich’s lead against the run of play but a low strike from Tom Edwards ensured a deserved draw for the Potters. Norwich’s slip allowed second-placed Sheffiel...

Result: Wigan Athletic beat 10-man Preston North End to secure Championship survival

Wigan secured their Sky Bet Championship status in style with a 2-0 derby-day triumph over a Preston side who played for most of the game with 10 men after Ryan Ledson was sent off. The Latics were already 1-0 up when Ledson lost his head – and almost removed that of Kal Naismith with a dangerously high foot on 34 minutes that left referee Andy Madley with no option. Naismith had laid Wigan’s opening goal on a plate for Leon Clarke inside 11 minutes after a mistake in the Preston defence. And the win was secured midway through the second half when Lee Evans rifled home from 12 yards to kick the party into full swing. With news of Rotherham’s home defeat to Birmingham filtering through, Wigan could celebrate retaining their Championship status after suffering relegation in each ...
