Bristol City boss Lee Johnson calls for “live finances” for clubs

Lee Johnson has called for more transparency in club finances after his side lost out on a Sky Bet Championship play-off place on the final day of the season. Following Bristol City‘s 1-1 draw against Hull at the KCOM Stadium, Johnson called for more regular checks on what clubs are spending under the profitability and sustainability rules. Derby clinched the final play-off place, with Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson recently calling their financial dealings into question. And Johnson said: “Whatever the rules are the rules should be administered properly and everybody should have live finances. “Maybe every couple of months so everybody can see everybody is on track.” Johnson has been linked with becoming the next permanent manager of West Brom but made it clear h...

Result: Bristol City miss out on playoffs with draw at Hull

Bristol City drew 1-1 at Hull on a dramatic final day of the season as the Robins failed to make the Sky Bet Championship play-offs. Lee Johnson’s side had gone into the game needing to win but as both Derby and Middlesbrough won their games what happened at the KCOM Stadium became irrelevant to the play-off picture. Jackson Irvine scored early in the second half with a low shot but the visitors scrambled an equaliser late on to ensure the points were shared. Famara Diedhiou missed two first-half chances to put the Robins ahead, the second a close-range header which came back off the bar. Substitute Nicolas Eliasson also saw his second-half goal ruled out for handball. Hull head coach Nigel Adkins kept his promise to field a strong side as Jarrod Bowen, Kamil Grosicki, Markus Henriksen and...

Preview: Hull City vs. Bristol City – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole provides team news, predicted lineups and a full preview of Sunday’s Championship encounter between Hull City and Bristol City. Bristol City make the trip to the KCOM Stadium to face Hull City knowing that only a win will be enough to maintain their hopes of reaching the Championship playoffs. Hull have gone four matches without a win, but Nigel Adkins‘s team can still finish as high as ninth position in the standings. Hull City © Reuters There was a time this season when Hull would have been delighted with entering the final weekend of the campaign sitting in 13th position, but that is no longer the case after a four-game winless streak. The Tigers were in contention to earn an unlikely place in the playoffs at the beginning of April, and it would have represented ...

Result: Bristol City come from behind to keep playoff hopes alive

Famara Diedhiou‘s late winner kept Bristol City‘s play-off hopes alive as the Robins came from behind to beat Millwall at The Den. After a relatively quiet first 40 minutes, Lee Gregory opened the scoring in what looks to be his final game in SE16 with a perfectly executed volley after being set up by Steve Morison. Neil Harris’ men had the chance to put the game to bed when the pair combined again and the Lions’ goalscorer was clipped by visiting goalkeeper Max O’Leary for a penalty. However, Shaun Williams’ resulting spot-kick was saved and Lee Johnson’s charges responded in clinical fashion, with Jamie Paterson and Diedhiou turning the contest on its head. Bristol City were fifth and four points clear of seventh after a 3-2 win over West Bromwic...

Wigan boss Paul Cook hails “outstanding” Reece James in Bristol City draw

Paul Cook heaped praise on Reece James after the Chelsea loanee helped Wigan to a battling point from a 2-2 Championship draw at Bristol City. The 19-year-old midfielder demonstrated why he was selected for the Championship team of the year by scoring a stunning strike, beating Max O’Leary with a swerving 37th-minute shot from 30 yards. Matty Taylor then scored one goal and set up another as City stormed back after the break, only for substitute Anthony Pilkington to level in stoppage time and deny Lee Johnson‘s men a third straight win since the international break. Not for the first time this season, Cook was thrilled with James’ performance, while also hailing the battling qualities of his relegation-threatened team. “Reece was outstanding and his goal epitomises...

Result: Jonathan Joseph stars as Bath beat troubled Bristol

Jonathan Joseph used Bath’s return to a happy hunting ground to press his claim for an England recall, but a 26-19 victory over Bristol came at the cost of a shoulder injury to Joe Cokanasiga. Joseph claimed his first try at Twickenham for 18 months and brilliantly set up the second for centre colleague Jamie Roberts in a bonus-point win that heightens the Bears’ Gallagher Premiership relegation fears. It is an arena that has provided 11 of Joseph’s 17 international tries, but the Lion’s last cap was over a year ago with England preferring Henry Slade and Manu Tuilagi in the number 13 jersey. None of Eddie Jones’ coaching staff were present in a 60,152 crowd at Twickenham to witness his man-of-the-match contribution, and they also missed Cokanasiga being withd...

Lee Johnson “delighted” as Bristol City move into playoff places

Lee Johnson likened his Bristol City side to “young gunslingers” as they shot down Middlesbrough to climb into the Sky Bet Championship play-off positions. Adam Webster’s first-half header lifted City into fifth position in the table, with the 1-0 win at the Riverside following hot on the heels of Saturday’s victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. Having been on the fringe of the promotion race for much of the season, City are now at the heart of the battle for a place in the Premier League, and Johnson is delighted with the way in which his young side have risen to the challenge of competing in the upper echelons of the table. Johnson said: “I was delighted with the boys. We have a big respect for the club, their players and managers and we were like t...

Result: Bristol City into playoff spots as Boro slump to fifth straight defeat

Bristol City moved into the Sky Bet Championship play-off places as Adam Webster‘s first-half header secured a 1-0 win at out-of-form Middlesbrough. Having beaten Sheffield United on Saturday, Lee Johnson’s side saw off another of their promotion rivals as they leapfrogged Derby and Aston Villa to move into the top six. Middlesbrough had plenty of opportunities, but Jonny Howson and Britt Assombalonga both hit the frame of the goal on another frustrating night for the hosts. Boro have now suffered five defeats in a row, and have slipped two points adrift of the play-off positions as their form has imploded at a critical stage of the season. Even the long-awaited return of Stewart Downing was unable to help them, with the former England international failing to arrest a goalless...

Result: Worcester just edge Bristol to boost survival hopes

Worcester completed the double with a nail-biting 27-25 win over Bristol to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation from the Gallagher Premiership. Warriors won 52-7 at Sixways back in October but they had to work much harder for this success and by overcoming a number of setbacks and two yellow cards to pick up a crucial win. Ted Hill, Josh Adams and Ben Te’o scored their tries with Duncan Weir converting all three and adding two penalties. Luke Morahan and Callum Sheedy scored tries for Bristol. There was also a penalty try award with Sheedy kicking two penalties and a conversion. Worcester suffered a pre-match blow when powerhouse wing Bryce Heem withdrew through family commitments. Three minutes into the game, they received another blow when fly-half Jono Lance was forced to lea...

Paul Lambert hails Ipswich youngster after draw at high-flying Bristol City

Paul Lambert hailed his talented youngsters after watching Ipswich take a deserved point in a 1-1 draw with Bristol City at Ashton Gate. Centre-back Adam Webster put City ahead against his old club on 32 minutes, rising at the far post to nod home a Niclas Eliasson cross from the right. But spirited Ipswich refused to cave in and grabbed a deserved equaliser on 68 minutes when City left-back Lloyd Kelly turned Myles Kenlock’s driven cross from the left into his own net. The result was enough to lift City back into the play-off zone, but their performance attracted loud jeers from home fans at the final whistle. “We had six Academy lads in the squad and to come here and play like that was fantastic,” said Lambert. “I am over the moon about the performance. You need a...

Result: Wasps hold off Bristol fightback to move into Premiership play-offs

Wasps moved back into the Gallagher Premiership play-off positions after edging out Bristol 29-22 in an Ashton Gate thriller. Wales flanker Thomas Young, hooker Tom Cruse and number eight Nizaam Carr scored first-half tries to put the visitors in control. And when a bonus point score arrived just 12 minutes into the second half, following Will Rowlands capitalising on a Bristol handling blunder to cross unopposed, it looked done and dusted for Wasps. But Bristol, 16 points adrift at half-time, had other ideas as tries from scrum-half Harry Randall, centre Piers O’Conor and substitute Charles Piutau threatened a spectacular fightback. Wasps’ former Bristol fly-half Billy Searle kicked two conversions, but he was then carried off on his Ashton Gate return after suffering what app...
