Champions League Barcelona vs Bayern Munich 9/14/2021 Prediction and Match Preview

The Champions League kicks off this week and there is a massive match-up on Tuesday, when Spanish powerhouse Barcelona will play host to German giants Bayern Munich. Barcelona are still getting accustomed to a Messi-less life but are doing a solid job, while Bayern Munich have been firing in all cylinders this season but are coming here with a very important injury concern.

Barcelona are one of the teams that had their weekend matches rescheduled, which is actually quite unfair towards other clubs. The team is now without Lionel Messi, who was shipped off to Paris, but they have done a good job so far, with 2 wins and a draw after 3 matches in the new season. Last season they only made it to the round of 16 of the Champions League, where they were destroyed by a harsh 4-1 at home in the hands of PSG, before a 1-1 draw in this venue that left them eliminated. They had done a really good job in the Group Stage last season (5 wins, 1 loss), scoring 16 and conceding 5 goals, but 3 of those conceded goals came in the 3-0 loss to Juventus in the final match-day. More importantly, Barcelona have been excellent at home in the Champions League, losing just 3 of their last 62 matches (50 wins, 3 losses, 9 draws).

Bayern Munich are coming in hot after a massive 4-1 away win against RB Leipzig over the weekend. However, key man Robert Lewandowski was subbed off at the 59th minute due to an adductor injury, while Gnabry is also questionable with a back injury. Coach Nagelsmann stated on Sunday that he hopes both players will be back for the match against Barcelona, but for now we are listing them as questionable/doubtful. Bayern Munich have been ecstatic this season, except for the 1-1 draw against Gladbach in the premiere. Since then they have won all 5 matches in all competitions, scoring at least 3 goals in each match for a total of 27 goals in 5 matches! Last season they were eliminated by PSG in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, after losing by 3-2 at home and beating PSG by 1-0 on the road, but the away goals rule was still in effect.

Barcelona vs Bayern Munich. The two teams last met in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Champions League, where Bayern Munich completely humiliated Barcelona by a mind-boggling 8-2 win in Barcelona. Bayern Munich have now won 4 of their last 5 matches against Barcelona, and they have also been great in this venue over the years (4 wins, 2 losses). It will all come down to whether Lewandowski can play (and start) in this match, if he does, we are definitely taking the Bayern win here.
